Post-op Instructions

Following proper post-operative care is essential for a smooth recovery and to prevent complications. Whether you’ve undergone a tooth extraction, dental implant placement, or other oral surgery, adhering to these guidelines will help ensure your healing process is as quick and comfortable as possible.

General Post-Op Instructions

  1. Control Bleeding: After your procedure, some bleeding is normal. We will provide you with gauze to place over the surgical area. Bite down gently but firmly on the gauze, and change it every 30-45 minutes, or as needed. If bleeding persists, use a fresh gauze pad or a moist tea bag and apply pressure.

  2. Pain Management: Mild discomfort is common after most dental procedures. Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage the pain. If we’ve prescribed medication, follow the instructions carefully. Avoid aspirin as it can increase bleeding.

  3. Swelling: Swelling is a natural response to surgery and can be minimized by applying an ice pack to the outside of your face in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 hours.

  4. Diet: Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the procedure was performed. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that can irritate the area. Stay hydrated, but avoid using straws, as suction can dislodge blood clots and hinder healing.

  5. Oral Hygiene: Keep your mouth clean, but avoid brushing directly on the surgical site for the first 24 hours. After that, gently rinse with warm salt water to help reduce swelling and keep the area clean.
